A freezer is supposed to be a pause button. In most houses it is a place where food goes to be forgotten with good intentions. Everything in there was saved rather than thrown away, which felt responsible at the time — but food saved and never eaten is simply waste on a delay.
Empty it once and look
Take everything out onto the counter, ideally on a cold day and quickly. Most freezers contain three things people knew about and a dozen they did not. Sort into three piles: identifiable and good, identifiable but old, and unlabelled mysteries. The first pile becomes this fortnight’s dinners, the second gets an honest decision, and the third gets tasted.
What is still worth eating
Frozen food does not become unsafe in a working freezer; it loses quality. Freezer burn — the dry, greyish, crystallised patches — is unpleasant but not dangerous, and can be cut away. Rough guidelines: raw meat and fish three to six months, cooked dishes two to three, bread three, vegetables a year. Past that, food is progressively less worth eating rather than unsafe. Judge by how it looks and smells once thawed.
How to cook an unidentified container
Thaw it in the fridge, smell it, taste a spoonful. Most mystery containers turn out to be a tomato-based something, a stock, or a portion of a stew, and all three go into a pot with onions and become dinner. If it is genuinely unidentifiable and unappealing, let it go. The point of the audit is to free up space and stop the guilt, not to force yourself through six months of dubious leftovers.
Then use the found food deliberately
Plan a fortnight around what came out. A freezer clear-out is the cheapest two weeks of eating available, and it is far more motivating than a resolution to waste less. Work from oldest to newest, and do not buy anything that duplicates what you already have. That rule alone stops the next accumulation.
Label everything, from now on
Two words and a date on a piece of tape. Contents and month. Every unlabelled container is a future decision you will not want to make, and the reason most of it never gets eaten. Keep a list on the freezer door and cross things off as they leave. It sounds fussy and it takes ten seconds, and it is the difference between a freezer that saves money and one that quietly stores it.
Empty it, sort it, eat the good half over a fortnight and let the rest go without ceremony. Then label everything and keep a list, so the pause button stays a pause button.
